Old India Photos - Macaulay's address to British Parliament dated 2-February-1835. It reads…
I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief, such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their selfesteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.

The strike continues at Delhi. The people are reported to be maintaining a sullen attitude. The "prevention of seditious meetings act" has been put into force at Multan, southwest of Lahore, and at Jullundur, east of Lahore. Communication with the northern Punjab has been interrupted. A serious outbreak occurred early in the week at Chukarkkan, in the Gujranwala district north of Lahore, and a railway station was wrecked. Mrs. Annie Besant, theosophical and nationalist leader, it is added, has issued a statement condemning the extremists.

  3. This is an amazing collection. Reading what Lord Macaulay had to say about India proves that we were a great nation indeed. I wonder if it's just the change in education pattern that brought a deterioration in our culture and society.

  20. Hi Bhavesh,
Loved your site - what great photos!

Just wanted to point out something. The postcard attributing the "I have traveled across the length and breadth of India" quote to Macaulay is false. The views expressed in the quote go against what Macaulay thought about India. Also, he was in India in Feb 1835 and hence could not have given a speech in Parliament in England.
    Just thought I'd mention it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @ Tina S: Thanks for appreciating my blog. And I agree with you. In fact, I had felt while publishing that Macaulay's note seems to be false. I had no concrete backing however, which you have provided. Thanks for your input :)

  43. Hon;ble Madam / Sir ,

    HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012
    In past 100 years,
    Delhi has developed a lot
but the river Yamuna has constantly decayed...

It is time to stop destruction of Yamuna!

    In the coming new year,
let us make a fresh beginning
& bring back life to our beloved river Yamuna.

The pollution in Yamuna and other rivers of the country is a grave problem known to all of us. One of the main sources of this pollution is the dumping of flowers, plastic bags, agarbatti packets and other worship materials by the people. Any amount of cleaning of river Yamuna will not work until the dumping of this material into the river is not stopped.

Our organization, Youth Fraternity Foundation, have been working with a solution to this problem with a project named "Pushpanjali Prawah".

The concept behind this project is to collect these sacred wastes *from their point of creation*: temples, shops, homes etc. respectfully and dispose/recycle this material in an appropriate manner, without causing any pollution to the river or causing air pollution caused by burning of this waste. We have run this program successfully at small scale in few area in Delhi and Mumbai for some time.

With availability of funds, this program can be easily expanded to all areas of Delhi as a sustainable sacred waste management system. We have discussed this idea with several temples as well as leaders of various religious organizations, and all of them have extended their consent and support for this system.

If you are seeking a solution to this problem, we would be happy to assist you fully in setting up this system. SAVE YAMUNA @ SAVE DELHI

    With Warm Regards

but seeing Macaulay's address to British Parliament, really i was shockingggggg that ... ohhhhhh...

but today also we are going toward west.....

thanks bhavesh thanks again to sharing this photo with all.

    1. I think, Macaulay's address is a fake photo. And I agree, we are going towards west today also. Indian culture was good for us; remember the days of our childhood when things were amazingly simple and life was satisfactory.

  46. We are the oldest civilization. We have richest history. But we were not strong enough to save our culture, our heritage and stuff. Divide and rule policy worked in India very easily which made Mughals and then British Raj rule our country.

From the beginning we just want to fill our pockets with money no matter if it is black money. It happened before and is happening now. Very few people knows to fight, most of us opt for easy and safe path no matter the path is right or wrong.

We were so rich that even after taking so much from us we are still have our culture, heritage and yes we have wealth as well. But big thing is we are not able to see it. We need to restore it. There should be a proper flow of money. We need to follow rule. The public has to unit and change then the system will definitly change (but this is where we have always failed from the beginning). We should take habits and rules from western coutries not just their clothes, food etc.

I love to see my country's old pics when life was simple and poeple were more INDIAN.

    Thanks for posting these pics.
